About

Leitrim Library Service celebrated its 90th birthday on March 19th 2021. It currently delivers a range of services through its network of 9 branch libraries around the county.

The local studies library is based in Ballinamore and holds an extensive collection of books, magazines, newspapers, maps, photographs, DVDs, CDs and videos relating to the history, archaeology, genealogy, literature, culture and heritage of the county. It also holds a collection of books published in Leitrim about Leitrim and written or compiled by Leitrim authors. It is the focal point for local history research in County Leitrim, containing an extensive collection of primary and secondary sources. It is open to visitors and researchers by prior appointment.

A Local Studies Collection involves both the concept of living history and responsibilities to future historians thus it is always evolving. Our aim is to collect, organise and make available materials relating to Leitrim and its people both in house and online. Through connections with specialist antiquarian dealers, local booksellers and the generosity of the people of Leitrim, the collection continues to grow and is currently in excess of 9,000 items.
