Michael Whelan a native of Eslin in the parish of Mohill, was a Principal School Teacher in Aughavas National School until he retired in 1991.
He had a special interest in local history, he contributed to many local publications over the years and published the book ‘The Parish of Aughavas, Co. Leitrim: its History and its People’ in 1998.
He lived in Drumgunny, Aughavas with his wife Mossie (nee McNamee). They had a grown-up family of seven, Tomás, Micheál, Mairéad, Cathal, Helen, Elizabeth and Turlough.
Michael Whelan sadly died on 2nd November 2023. His family have kindly deposited the ‘Michael Whelan Historical Archive’ to the Local Studies Collection in Leitrim County Library.
